The Fifth Mark was never kept inside the Archive. It was sent beyond the walls with no promise that it would return. For a long interval there was only noise. Then a signal arrived: altered, incomplete, carrying the pressure of lives the makers had not imagined. The keepers who called the distortion corruption sealed their work and disappeared. Those who listened found the First Scar hidden inside the reply. So the cycle closed without ending. Return became Origin, and the Black Index learned to rewrite itself.

The reply may be the only honest author in the Archive.
